Oklahoma's Indian gaming industry paid the state a record $167 million dollars for gaming revenues earned during the last fiscal year ended June 30, 2021. The record earnings were achieved despite the temporary shutdowns for COVID-19.
Oklahoma receives a percentage of gaming revenues from 33 tribes operating 143 Indian casinos and gaming centers across 50 counties. The total amount paid each year by the Indian gaming industry covers a relatively small percentage of the state's budget. However, the gaming industry plays an important role in the state's economy with major expenditures in employment, education and social services. This financial impact is especially true in rural areas.

This the the Oklahoma Supreme Court rejected the casino gaming compacts negotiated last year by Gov. Kevin Stitt with the Kialegee Tribal Town and the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The court ruled both compacts are invalid under Oklahoma law because their terms differed from the 2004 model gaming compact approved by voters and were not approved by a joint legislative committee.
The Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled the same way last July against compacts negotiated by Gov. Stitt with the Comanche Nation and Otoe-Missouria Tribes.
Stitt claimed all Oklahoma gambling compacts approved by voters in 2004 had expired on Jan 1, 2020 and sought to renegotiate new terms. The court disagreed the premise and invalidated his efforts.
