The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community has decided not to peruse the proposed Baraga casino.
A general election was held this past weekend where tribal voters denied two casino based referendas. The first was for the purchase of the Baraga Lakeside Inn. The second was for the approval for the $31 million needed for renovations of the property into the new casino and hotel.
Earlier this year, tribal members voted in favor to purchase a hotel in a similar proposal. However, the property was foreclosed on before the tribe could complete the deal.
A public forum was the hosting venue for the earlier vote. This was criticized by opponents to the proposal.
