Nevada Indian casinos are built on tribal land that is held in trust by the U.S. federal government. The tribe has sovereignty over the land in accordance with federal guidelines.
To build a casino on their land, tribes must first get federal approval and then negotiate a gaming compact with the state government. Final gaming approval comes from the U.S. Department of Interior. The Indian gaming operation in Nevada is regulated by the National Indian Gaming Commission.
There are two Nevada tribes and one Arizona tribe with gambling operations in Nevada. A third Nevada tribe plans a fourth gaming facility.
