Yreka is about a year away from having a new casino in operation. The casino location may possibly attract local visitors as well as visitors from Southern Oregon .

The group behind the new casino is the Karuk Tribe from Happy Camp. They are the second largest tribe in California. The casino has been in the planning phase for over ten years. The casino was set to start construction in May. However, delays from gaining state approval had slowed the project.

In December of last year, a gaming compact was approved between the tribe and the state. It was signed by Gov. Jerry Brown. The compact was also approved last week by the State Senate.

The casino resort will be built in two stages. It will be 56,000 square feet when completed. The casino will operate a total of 1,500 game tables and slot machines. In addition to the casino there will also be two restaurants and a hotel.
