Approval has been granted by officials for a casino to be built in Siskiyou
County. The National Indian Gaming Commission gave its permission on Monday to
the Karuk Tribe.
For close to ten years the Northern California tribe has tried to gain approval
to build a casino. Receiving the approval from the federal officials was a major
mile stone in the tribe's goal.
The tribe will still need to receive approval from additional groups. There will
be meetings with the county officials, as well as with city officials. The Karuk
will also still need to agree with the state over a land compact.
The plan calls for the casino to be built in Yreka, and close to the 5 Freeway.
Other plan details have not been released.
