KARUK TRIBE'S YREKA CASINO PROJECT
The Northern California Karuk Tribe is planning to build a tribal casino
along Interstate 5 in Yreka. The opening date is to be determined.
The Yreka casino was granted federal approval by the National Indian Gaming
Commission (NIGC) on April 9, 2012. This decision followed years of effort
by the Karuk Tribe which had initiated a federal petition in 2003.
The press release following the NIGC-approval announcement was very limited
in its description of the project. The building site is 200 acres off I-5
and the estimated jobs created will be 200. The casino name and construction
details of the planned facility were not determined at the time. Plans will
be developed and announced over time as the Karuk Tribe works out details
with Siskiyou County officials and the City of Yreka.
