Franklin Casino Bill Passed by WV Senate Judiciary Committee

A state committee passed a bill on Thursday that would allow for a new casino development located near the state boarder of Virginia.

The bill was approved by the West Virginia Senate Judiciary Committee. The proposed location of the new casino would be in Franklin, at the previous Pendleton County resort complex.

A condition to the approval of the bill is for the casino developers to build a hotel with over 150 guest rooms. There also must be over 1,000 home sites added to the plans. In addition, the project must cost over $80 million to complete.

It is estimated the new casino project will create 300 jobs in the area. People in support of the bill believe that many of the visitors will come from neighboring Virginia. They also believe that the location of will be distant enough away that it will not compete with other casinos.

The bill will now be sent to the state's Finance Committee to be voted on.
