Legislators Sue to Block SugarHouse CasinoPHILADELPHIA – Seven state legislators filed suit last week to stop construction of the SugarHouse Casino. The suit contends that Philadelphia officials do not have authority to license construction on submerged banks of the Delaware River. That requires state legislation to grant "riparian rights". Philadelphia's licensing authority is limited to wharfs, docks, and other harbor structures, excluding casinos. SugarHouse Casino received its license to build a $600 million casino on twelve acres of state owned land. Plans included the extension of one pier and removal of fill and broken structures from the other piers. A marina and a water taxi dock will be built. The lawsuit may force the SugarHouse Casino to abandon the site or redesign its building. Return to Pennsylvania Casinos. |
