Michigan's 20 Native American casinos are not covered by state law and therefore are exempt from the smoking ban signed into law by Gov. Jennifer Granholm in December.

The law takes effect May 1, and bans smoking in public places including most workplaces, restaurants and bars. Cigar bars, Detroit casinos, and tobacco shops are also exempt from the ban.

Michigan will be the 38th state to prohibit smoking in public places.
