The owners of the 75 year old Suffolk Downs race track presented a new resort casino idea today. If approved, the project will cost an estimated $600 million and be a world class destination. Plans include a resort with 400 to 600 guest rooms. There are also plans for dinning, retail shops, and a spa. The current 800,000 square foot grandstand will be renovated to include a clubhouse, gaming, a restaurant, and retail.

Approval needs to come from the state before plans can proceed. Currently legislature is meeting to discuss the states proposed gaming regulations. Two plans are being debated by congress. The state senate would like to allow one casino in each of the state’s three regions. The state’s House would like the market to determine the casino placements. Allowing for two casinos and the operation of 3,000 slot machines. 750 machines would be allowed at racetracks.

If the owners are granted a state license to run a casino it will create 2,000 immediate construction jobs. As well as 2,250 permanent jobs.
