NEWTON, IA – The proposed Newton casino and resort hotel would be built across the street from the Iowa Speedway. The site is east of the Newton airport, north of the Iowa Speedway, and just south of Interstate-80.

SUMMARY

  • $60-$100 million project
  • 70,000-square-foot casino
  • Hotel
  • Conference Center
  • Restaurants
  • RV Park
  • 400-600 jobs

The newly established nonprofit group named Jasper County Gaming Development Authority is planning the casino complex with Regency Land Development of West Des Moines. Regency Development built the Wild Rose Casino in Emmetsburg and is currently building the Wild Rose in Clinton.

Supporters have begun gathering signatures for a referendum on the April ballot. A total of 1,485 signatures are needed. If Jasper County voters approve the measure, it will be up to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission to issue a gaming license to the casino. The commission will decide in March whether to issue new casino licenses. Iowa already has 20 casinos and there is concern that additional licenses will saturate the casino market.
