New Casino in Newton?
January 10, 2008
DES MOINES, IA – TV channel 8 KCCI reported growing support for a new casino in
Newton, Iowa where jobs were lost when Maytag closed last year.
KCCI further reports “the executive director of the Jasper County Economic
Development Corporation, Craig Hamilton, has registered a nonprofit corporation
in hopes of building a casino near the Iowa Speedway in Newton.”
Mr. Hamilton said "We're envisioning something that could be in the neighborhood
of 5-600 jobs, potentially; we're hoping there's going to be a hotel associated
with it in time."
Local supporters for the casino will start a signature drive next week for a
Jasper County ballot referendum this spring. Fifteen hundred signatures are
required. If the referendum passes, the
The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission is meeting March 6th to consider removing
the ban on new casinos. If the ban is lifted and the referendum passes, the path
will be cleared for issuing a new casino license for Newton.
