Country Club Hills Mayor Wants Casino

April 1, 2008

COUNTRY CLUB HILLS, ILLINOIS - Mayor Dwight Welch told a Illinois House budget hearing in south Holland that he wants the Illinois General Assembly to approve any legislation that allows development of a casino in Country Club Hills.

The mayor wants to stop the flow of local residents to Indiana casinos. "We need to stop looking passively at Indiana and all the casino dollars that leave (our state)," he said.

Welch wants more money for road repairs and for better schools and believes casino revenues would provide these funds. "There just is no other funding mechanism," Welch said. "I want to keep some of that money in Illinois," which he estimates is $431 million paid each year to the state of Indiana by the three casinos near the Illinois border.

Currently House Bill 4194 is under consideration by the legislature. The bill would authorize use of a 10th gaming boat license, create an 11th gaming boat license, and add a casino in Chicago.
