Route 76 East Widening Begins

April 9, 2008

SAN DIEGO COUNTY - The project to widen and straighten 10 miles of the dangerous state Route 76 east of Interstate 15 will begin this month. The first phase will be 1.3 miles between I-15 and Rice Canyon Road, which will take 20 months to complete.

The highway project will eventually include the $300 million casino and resort at the Pauma Indian Reservation and the large expansion of the Pala Casino and Resort.

The Pala Band of Mission Indians will pay $38 million for improvements to the highway and nearby roads as a condition for their expansion project.
About $13 million of these funds are allocated for the I-15 to Rice Canyon Road segment, and $20 million for the next 4 miles to the casino. $5 million will pay for improvements in front of the casino.

As similar deal with the Pauma Band of Mission Indians is expected to complete the last 5 miles of the highway project.
