The Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas is the oldest reservation community in the state, located in the forested Big Thicket region east of Livingston. The Tribe maintains a strong cultural identity rooted in the Alabama and Koasati languages, traditional governance, and stewardship of their East Texas homeland.
The Tribe operates a modern government with programs in education, health, housing, environmental protection, and cultural preservation, while also welcoming visitors to experience its natural landscape and heritage.
The Tribe has an enrolled population of approximately 1,200 citizens, with about half residing on the reservation in Polk County. Citizenship is determined by the Tribe's own constitutional and enrollment laws, reflecting its sovereign authority.
The Tribe operates Naskila Casino, a Class II gaming facility that serves as a major economic engine for tribal programs and regional tourism. A larger resort expansion is planned as part of long-term economic development.
The Tribe's economic development corporation oversees business ventures and partnerships both on and off the reservation.
The Tribe manages Lake Tombigbee Campground and other nature-based tourism offerings, providing recreation, cultural experiences, and visitor engagement with the Big Thicket environment.
The Alabama and Coushatta peoples originally lived in the southeastern United States as part of the broader Muscogee (Creek) cultural sphere. Pressures from European and later American expansion in the 18th and early 19th centuries pushed both groups westward into Louisiana and eventually East Texas.
In 1854, the State of Texas established a reservation for the Alabama people. Although a separate tract for the Coushatta was never created, the two communities united on the same land through intermarriage and shared governance.
After a period of federal termination in the mid-20th century, the Tribe's federal recognition was fully restored in 1987. Today, the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas continues to strengthen its government, economy, and cultural traditions.
