Agua Caliente Secures Long-Term Gaming Compact Extension Through 2061

Sept. 22, 2026 - The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians has secured a new long-term tribal-state gaming compact after California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation ratifying an amended agreement that extends through Dec. 31, 2061.

The legislation, Assembly Bill 2173, provides the tribe with additional flexibility for future growth, including authorization for up to 500 additional gaming devices across its casino operations. The agreement also restructures Agua Caliente's contributions to California's Revenue Sharing Trust Fund, which provides support to non-gaming and limited-gaming tribes throughout the state.

The compact amendment represents one of the most significant developments for the tribe's gaming operations in recent years, providing a framework for long-term stability while creating opportunities for future expansion and economic development.

Assemblymember Greg Wallis, R-Bermuda Dunes, who authored AB 2173, praised the tribe's longstanding role in the Coachella Valley following the governor's approval.

"Agua Caliente has been a tremendous partner to the Coachella Valley for generations, working closely with our local governments and investing in the communities we call home," Wallis said. "This agreement respects tribal sovereignty, supports continued economic opportunity, and strengthens a partnership that has delivered real benefits throughout our region."

The Agua Caliente Band's reservation encompasses significant portions of Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage and Cathedral City. The tribe operates multiple gaming and non-gaming enterprises throughout the Coachella Valley and is among the region's largest employers.

Tribal Chairman Jeff Grubbe and other tribal representatives worked with state officials throughout the compact amendment process. The amended agreement maintains the tribe's participation in California's tribal revenue-sharing system while providing additional operational flexibility for future projects.

The legislation passed both houses of the California Legislature without opposition and took effect immediately upon Gov. Newsom's signature as an urgency measure.

While the tribe has not announced specific plans for additional gaming devices, the authorization for up to 500 new positions could support future enhancements at Agua Caliente's casino properties in Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage and Cathedral City.

The approval continues a longstanding government-to-government relationship between California and the Agua Caliente Band while positioning the tribe for continued economic development and investment opportunities throughout the Coachella Valley.
