MADERA, Calif. - The $725 million North Fork Mono Casino & Resort appears to be entering its final pre-opening phase, with gaming equipment arriving on site, hiring efforts continuing and operational preparations accelerating. Yet despite growing signs that the project is nearing completion, tribal officials have not announced an opening date.
The lack of a launch date has created an unusual situation for one of California's most closely watched tribal gaming developments. While visible construction milestones suggest the resort is transitioning toward operations, prospective customers, job applicants and local stakeholders remain uncertain about when the property will open its doors.
Located along Highway 99 north of Madera, the casino is expected to feature more than 2,400 slot machines, 40 table games, eight dining venues and more than 4,000 parking spaces when completed. A future hotel is planned as part of a later phase of development.
Recent activity suggests the project's focus is shifting away from construction and toward operational readiness. The first slot machines have arrived at the property, dealer training is underway and recruitment efforts continue ahead of opening. Casino officials have also been promoting advance enrollment in the property's rewards program as preparations move forward.
Those developments come as the project remains the subject of ongoing litigation. The Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians, operator of Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino, has filed a federal lawsuit seeking to block gaming operations at the North Fork property. The North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians has continued preparing for opening while maintaining that the project possesses the approvals necessary to proceed.
The legal battle represents the latest chapter in a development effort that has spanned more than two decades. After years of regulatory reviews, political disputes and court challenges, the tribe broke ground on the project in 2024 and has steadily advanced construction toward completion.
For now, the biggest unanswered question is no longer whether the casino will be built, but when it will open.
With gaming equipment arriving, employees being recruited and customer signups underway, the resort appears closer than ever to welcoming its first guests. Until a launch date is announced, however, one of California's largest tribal gaming developments remains poised between completion and commencement.
