In August 2024, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a 25-year gaming compact with the tribe.

Inyokern Casino

The Timbisha Shoshone Tribe, whose reservation is in the Death Valley National Park, has received approval from the Bureau of Indian Affairs to purchase 20 acres of land in Inyokern for the purpose of building a casino. The federal approval was issued on July 1, 2024.

Details of the Inyokern Casino plan have not been made public.

The Timbisha Shoshone Tribe failed in a previous attempt to build an off-reservation casino in Ridgecrest near the Naval Air Weapons Station at China Lake. That project failed in early 2022 when the tribe was unable to purchase the casino land before the federal deadline.

If the Inyokern casino plan is similar to the Ridgecrest casino plan, the casino will be 20,000 sq-ft with 349 slot machines, 6 table games, a restaurant and a bar.

Gov. Newsom has signed a 25-year tribal gaming compact with the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe, who plan to build a new casino in Inyokern, CA. The casino will be located on Highway 178 near Highway 395, and was approved by the U.S. Indian Affairs Bureau on July 1, 2024.

Casino details have not been released by the tribe.

The agreement authorizes Class III gaming at the Inyokern Casino and up to 1,200 slot machines. The entire 88-page agreement may be read here (PDF).

The compact was signed on August 7, 2024 by Gov. Gavin Newsom and Margaret Cortez, Chairperson of the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe.

Inyokern casino project gets federal approval

The Timbisha Shoshone Tribe have made a major step forward with a plan to build an Indian gaming casino in Inyokern, Kern County, California. The tribe, which is headquartered in Death Valley, applied the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs for permission to purchase a 20-acre parcel of land in Inyokern for the purpose of building an off-reservation casino.

The application was approved by the Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Indian Affairs on July 1, 2024. After the tribe purchases the land and fulfills all agency requirements, the land will be transferred into federal trust. The trust status will give the tribal land sovereignty over the jurisdictions of the state or local governments.

The next major step will be for the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe to submit a casino development plan to the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The process will include an environment impact report which will be released to the public. The report will provide comprehensive details of the Inyokern casino project, including the casino size, number of gaming machines, restaurants, entertainment, conference space, and possible hotel.
