Overview

The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians is a federally recognized tribe located in eastern San Diego County. The tribeoperates a modern government with programs supporting cultural preservation, environmental protection, education,and community development. Viejas Casino & Resort is a major economic enterprise that supports tribal programsand long-term initiatives.

Membership

The tribe has approximately 300 enrolled members. Membership is based on lineal descent and governed by thetribe's enrollment ordinance.

Brief History

The Viejas people are part of the Kumeyaay Nation, whose ancestral territory spans the region from the Pacificcoast to the desert. The Viejas Reservation was established in 1934 following the breakup of the Capitan GrandeReservation. The tribe has since developed a strong government and diversified economic enterprises whilemaintaining cultural traditions.
