The Pala Band of Mission Indians is a federally recognized tribe located in northern San Diego County. The tribeoperates a sovereign government with programs supporting cultural preservation, environmental protection,education, and community health. Pala Casino Spa Resort is the tribe's primary economic enterprise and supportsgovernment services and community development.
The tribe has approximately 900 enrolled members. Membership is based on lineal descent and governed by thetribe's enrollment ordinance.
The Pala people are primarily Cupeno and Luiseno descendants. In 1903, the Cupeno people were forcibly removedfrom their homeland at Kupa (Warner Springs) and relocated to Pala, where they joined the existing Luisenocommunity. The tribe adopted a constitution in 1994 and has since expanded its government and economicenterprises while preserving cultural traditions.
