Overview

The Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians is a federally recognized tribe located in southwestern Riverside County.The tribe operates a sovereign government with departments overseeing cultural preservation, natural resources,education, health, and economic development. Pechanga Resort Casino is one of the largest tribal gaming operationsin the United States and supports government services, community programs, and long-term development initiatives.

Membership

The Pechanga Band has an enrolled membership of approximately 1,100 citizens. Membership is based on lineal descentfrom original Pechanga Temecula people and is governed by the tribe's constitution and enrollment committee.

Brief History

The Pechanga people are part of the Luiseno (Payomkawichum) people, whose ancestral territory spans much ofpresent-day northern San Diego and southern Riverside counties. After Spanish missionization and later U.S.settlement displaced many Luiseno communities, the Pechanga Reservation was established in 1882. The tribeadopted a formal constitution in 1978 and has since strengthened its government, cultural programs, andeconomic enterprises. Today, Pechanga is a leading tribal nation in California, known for cultural revitalization,environmental stewardship, and major economic development projects.
