BETHLEHEM - The Las Vegas Sands Corp. announced the name of its $800 million casino complex under construction here. It will be the "Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem".
The new casino resort is scheduled to open in June 2009 and feature 3,000 slot machines, a 300-room hotel, an upscale shopping mall, restaurants, and a 3,500-seat events center.
This is the first Las Vegas Sands Corp. casino in this country that uses Sands in its name, said Robert DeSalvio, the Sands Bethlehem casino president. "It evokes nostalgia for the days gambling was legalized in the 1950s, and stars such as Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. frequented the original Sands after it was built in 1950 to turn Las Vegas into a desert oasis."
Also, putting the city into the name is an additional departure for Sands. Its Las Vegas "flagship" is called the Venetian, its sister is the Palazzo, and their Singapore casino is the Marina Bay Sands. None bear a city name.
