New York state senators have proposed a new bill that would allow for local
administration to approve casinos that would go in their area. The bill is being
proposed by senators Cecilia Tkaczyk and Liz Krueger,
The proposed bill was designed with the intention for the cities and communities
to be protected. Giving them the choice of where the casinos would be located.
The bill would also prevent property from being given to the state as a way to
avoid local zoning laws. The operators of the casinos will need to follow state
environmental laws before construction begins on the projects.
Last year, voters approved an amendment the the state constitution that would
allow for four new casinos to be constructed in upstate New York. This means
that any area that a casino is proposed to be developed, that area must approve
it first. The proposed law is a way to specify who is allowed to give the
approval.
