MONTICELLO, NY - The St. Regis Mohawk announced its election board has nullified
the results of their November 21st vote that would have ended the tribe's
efforts to build an off-reservation casino in the Catskills.
The board determined the vote did not meet the 30-day public posting
requirement. Tribal officials say another referendum will be held on a future
date yet to be determined.
Tribal members had cast 178 "no" votes and 140 "yes" votes on whether to pursue
development of a casino in Sullivan County. This follows a decade of efforts to
win approval to build a casino in Monticello, which is 230 miles south of their
reservation on the New York-Quebec border.
