A vote was made this week by the Leech Lake Band Of Ojibwe regarding changing
the location of the Palace Casino Hotel. The tribe voted in favor of the move
that will now be located closer to the city of Cass Lake.
The plan was passed by 78% of the tribal members.
The casino's current location is in a rural area. The move will place the casino
three miles away near the Paul Bunyan Expressway. Each year nearly three million
cars drive on the expressway.
The White Oak Casino is also owned by the tribe. That is located close to the
city of Deer River. In 2000 the tribe had also approved to build the Northern
Lights Casino just on the outside of Walker.
Palace Casino Hotel opened in the 1980's. Since that time the current building
has increased maintenance needs and repair costs. Due to this it was
decided to look at other options for the casino
Moving the casino is expected to $45 million. 500 new jobs will be created by
the project. Construction will begin next year in the spring. It is estimated
that the casino will open early 2019.
