The Senate's State Government Committee has voted against the proposed racino bill. The bill would have allowed for over 2,000 electronic gaming machines to be operated at horse racing tacks in the Twin Cities. It was estimated that $130 million would have been earned from tax revenue to help aide college scholarships.
Supporters and track owners have actively campaigned for the permission to operate slot machines. Their efforts have been ongoing for years. Supporters believe that the tracks have lost revenue to the casinos. The bill would have given the race tracks a way to compete for gaming dollars. Groups opposed to the bill include Native American Tribes operating casinos.
The proposed bill was voted 8 to 5 against the plan. However, racino bill supporters state they have not given up and will continue to try.
