WAYLAND TOWNSHIP - Construction is underway and on schedule for the $157 million Gun Lake Casino being built halfway between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo. The location is a 147-acre site formerly Ampro Products off Exit 61 on U.S. 131. If all continues well the casino will open at the end of summer.
"It depends on the weather for the next few months, but we're moving forward as planned," said James Nye, spokesman for the Gun Lake Tribe of Pottawatomi Indians.
The foundation has been laid and steel beams are being installed for the building which will feature 1200 slot machines, 36 gaming tables and restaurants.
The original plans were downsized last year due to the economy. The tribe hopes to enlarge the casino when the economy improves.
"Expanding in the future will depend on the economy and paying off the debt," Nye said
