On Tuesday ground was broken for the new $1 billion Mashpee Wampanoag tribe
casino in Taunton.
The gaming and resort facility has been named the First Light Resort & Casino.
It is being built on land that has been recognized by the federal government as
the tribe's reservation. The land is 151 acres.
The casino has had opposition. The land that was placed into trust has been
challenged by residents. This has also placed the question of weather or not a
casino could be operated by the tribe.
An agreement was made in 2013 that 17 percent of the gaming revenue will be paid
to the state. However if another casino opens in the area, the tribe is no
longer required to pay.
2017 is the scheduled opening for the first phase to open.
