A proposed referendum was denied by the state's attorney General, Martha Coakley. The referendum would have allowed for the new casino law to be repealed by voters.

The attorney general, under law, must determine if the new referendum is constitutional.

The decision made by Coakley was that it was not. Currently there is a law in the state's constitution allowing repeal referendum protection from any law that authorizes money to be appropriated to the commonwealth or its departments.

Supporters of the new casino law believe the state will earn millions in revenue taxes. This would fall under the state's constitutional law.

However opposition groups state they will continue to find ways to stop the expansion of gaming in the state.
