PORTLAND, Maine - Supporters of a statewide petition to build a resort and
casino in western Maine says it has collected 99,000 signatures. If more than
55,000 signatures are certified, the issue will qualify for Maine's ballot in
Black Bear Entertainment LLC spokesman Peter Martin says residents support an
Oxford County casino because it would help state revenues and create new jobs.
He said the signatures were gathered in just 20 days.
A California firm was paid $170,000 by the organizers to collect the signatures.
