DES PLAINES, IL - A ground-breaking ceremony for the yet-to-be-named Des Plaines casino was held Friday at the northwest corner of Des Plaines River Road and Devon Avenue near I-294.
Chicago real estate mogul Neil Bluhm and dozens of government officials broke ground on the new 147,000-square-foot casino and entertainment complex. It will open in late summer 2011.
The casino complex will include a 43,000-square-foot gambling area with a high-limit room, an entertainment lounge, sports bar and restaurants. The restaurants will include an upscale steakhouse, a buffet and a burger bar.
Friday's groundbreaking followed 12 years of court battles over the Illinois Legislature's 1999 decision to transfer the dormant Silver Eagle license from East Dubuque to Cook County.
The Des Plaines casino will be the tenth and last casino in Illinois unless state lawmakers vote to create more casino licenses.
