ELK GROVE, CA - The Wilton Rancheria has reached a settlement agreement with the
federal government to be recognized as a sovereign tribal nation.
The new Wilton Rancheria tribe is a consolidation of two tribes, the Me-Wuk
Indian Community of the Wilton Rancheria and the Wlton Miwok Rancheria.
Under the settlement, the tribe will now elect an interim governing council and
write a constitution to be approved by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The Wilton Rancheria tribe does not have any land because the old rancheria was
sold off to private owners.
The settlement allows the tribe to acquire land and place it into federal trust.
Land in trust allows the tribe to develop economic opportunities, such as Indian
casinos.
