CHICO, CA - The Mechoopda Indian Tribe of Chico Rancheria received good news
from the U.S. Department of the Interior in their hopes to build a casino near
Chico. The federal department reviewed the environmental impact reports and
decided there would be minimal effect caused by the project.
This ruling clears the way for the tribe to proceed to the next steps toward
building a casino near the intersection of state highways 99 and 149. The
casino will have 550-600 slot machines and ten table games.
The tribe will try to negotiate a gaming agreement, known as a compact, with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Governor has viewed Indian gaming as a revenue opportunity for the state. When agreed, the compact must be ratified by the state legislature.
