SAN DIEGO - The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians is planning a new concert
facility at their Viejas Casino. Details are still preliminary but a spokesman
expressed hopes it will open by 2009. Seating will be between 8,000 and 12,000.
It will replace the Concerts in the Park whose last season will be this summer.
Viejas has partnered with Nederlander Concerts to bring major concerts to the
new venue. Nederlander Concerts is the exclusive operator of the 5,800-seat
Greek Theatre in Los Angeles and the 4,562-seat Santa Barbara Bowl. In 2008
Viejas Casino and Nederlander will present 50-60 concerts at the Concerts in the
Park and the DreamCatcher Lounge.
The new concert facility is an addition to the $800 million expansion project
announced last August. Viejas Casino is adding a second casino, a new hotel with
600 rooms, and a spa. There will also be a new movie theater, more restaurants,
and 2 parking garages.
