Mechoopda Indian Tribe of Chico Rancheria plan to build a world-class casino south of Chico at Highway 99 and Highway 149 in Butte County.
Last month the National Indian Gaming Commission issued a FONSI (Finding of No Significant Impact) which means a full environmental review in not necessary to proceed.
The next step is for the U.S. Interior Department's Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) to approve the tribe's application to place their ancestral land into federal trust. Approval will give the tribe sovereignty and allow them to build a casino on the land.
Butte County opposes the casino location and county officials are fighting to move the location.
