After receiving federal and state approval to build a casino in Airway Heights, the Spokane Tribe of Indians began the first phase of construction on Nov 9, 2016. The casino is named the Spokane Tribe Casino and is located just 4 miles southwest of the Northern Quest Casino, owned by the Kalispel Tribe.
In early 2017 the Kalispel Tribe and Spokane County filed a lawsuit to block construction. The Kalispel said the U.S. Interior Department's approval of the casino on June 15, 2015 was an illegal violation of department's trust relationship with the tribe.
The suit failed to get an injunction, and the Spokane Tribe proceeded with construction. The Spokane Tribe Casino officially opened on Jan 8, 2018.
The casino is 38,000 square feet with 450 slot machines, 12 table games, and two restaurants. A second phase of construction is planned by 2026 which will add one million square feet retail space, 300-room hotel and convention center, and an entertainment center.
In a major victory this week for the Spokane Tribe, U.S. District Court Judge Frem Nielsen determined the U.S. Department of the Interior had substantial evidence to support its approval of the casino. The judge, therefore, dismissed the case.
