PHILADELPHIA - The $355 million SugarHouse casino will start construction October 8th at its 22-acre site along the Delaware River at Delaware Avenue and Shackamaxon Street in the Fishtown section.

The ground-breaking ceremony will be attended by a list of dignitaries headed by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and billionaire casino developer Neil Bluhm.

The first phase of construction will be completed in late summer 2010 and feature 1,700 slot machines.

A second Philadelphia slot casino, Foxwoods, is planned four miles south of SugarHouse, but it is delayed by debates over location and by financial complications.
