A new gaming compact has been signed between the Navajo Nation and New Mexico. The compact will allow for the tribe's casinos to remain in operation for the next 20 years.

The New Mexico Legislature approved the compact. However, the U.S. Interior Department still needs to give final approval.

It took three years for the compact to be agreed upon with negotiations.

The current gaming compact is scheduled to end in June of this year. If there were no new compact in place, casino operations by the Navajos would have to stop.

Three casinos are operated by the Navajos in New Mexico. $6 million is paid to the state as part of revenue sharing. The casinos earned $80 million last year.
