Town of Mashpee and Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Make Land Agreement

February 11, 2008

MASHPEE, MA - The town of Mashpee and the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe have reached an agreement regarding 140 acres the tribe owns in Mashpee.

The land will be placed into federal trust with the U.S. Department of Interior, which is a step to sovereignty which tribes take before building casinos under the National Indian Gaming Law.

However, the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe promised in their agreement not to build a casino in Mashpee and not to make further land claims in Mashpee.

This satisfies fears the town officials held that the tribe would build a casino there if their casino plans failed in Middleborough.
