BOSTON - The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe may be able to open an Indian casino earlier than the 2012 date projected by Gov. Deval Patrick as the opening date for three proposed commercial casinos in Massachusetts.

If the governor's plan moves forward, the tribe will have to decide whether to bid for a state commercial casino license and pay state taxes or to put casino land in federal trust.  The Cape Code Times reports the tribe is leaning toward the federal track for its casino. The tribe has petitioned to have more than 500 acres in Middleboro placed in federal trust for a casino, a process the tribe says could take as little as 18 months
