Mohegan Group Eyes Casino in Palmer, Massachusetts

August 2, 2007

The Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, operators of the Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville, Connecticut, signed an exclusivity deal last week with a development company that owns 150 acres of land in Palmer, near the Massachusetts Turnpike.

The project is currently scoped as a retail complex, but if casino licensing is approved by the state, the tribe will apply for operation of a casino on the site. Official from Mohegan Sun will begin analyzing the Palmer site to determine the potential size of the casino and the supporting infrastructure it will require.

Since the Palmer site is not tribal sovereign land, the future casino will be subject to state and local taxes like any other commercial business.

The Mohegan tribe is based in Uncasville, located in southeast Connecticut. They opened the Mohegan Sun casino in 1996 and became very successful, and in 2002 they doubled the size of their casino and added a 34-floor hotel, shops, restaurants, and an arena.
