MIDDLEBOROUGH - Residents of Middleboroug gathered at a town meeting Saturday and voted 2,387 to 1,335 to allow the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe build a $1 billion casino in their town.

Major obstacles still remain before the casino is a reality. Although the tribe was recently recognized by the federal government (last May), it will need state and federal approval for the casino.

The town would receive $250 million for infrastructure improvements and about $11 million in annual payments, among other benefits.

Before Europeans settled in New England, the Mashpee Wampanoag people propered along the Nemasket River, which winds through Middleborough. Their population declined after the King Philip’s War in the 1600s.
