FRANKFORT, KY - Governor Beshear outlined his long-awaited proposal yesterday to legalize casinos in Kentucky.

SUMMARY

  • The state would license up to 12 casinos around the state
  • 7 would be at existing race track
  • Estimated revenues to the state would be $600 million a year

  •      - 55% goes to education
         - 20% to health care
         - 3%-5% to hosting cities and counties
  • Kentucky legislature and the voters would have to approve a constitutional amendment

The Governor added, "If we approve this, it is going to create a revenue stream that is really going to help us to really jump start this state in so many ways: in education, in health care and economic development. It will be an economic tool, in and of itself."
