November 9, 2007

The 60% majority victory of governor-elect Steve Beshear sends a clear message that Kentuckians favor legalized casino gambling. Beshear wants casino revenues to fund education and not lose these revenues to neighboring states.

The General Assembly will now feel the groundswell and debate the issue in its next session. They will decide whether a constitutional amendment to expand gambling should be placed on voter ballots in the November 2008 election.

Recent polling by The Courier-Journal in Louisville found 78% favored a ballot initiative to decide the issue.

If an initiative is approved by the voters, the expectation is for five or six casino to be licensed around the state. Kentucky racetracks will be among the primary candidates bidding for licenses.
