4 new casinos proposed for Iowa
March 23, 2010
TAMA, WEBSTER, WAPELLO, and LYON COUNTIES - Four casino groups asked the Iowa
Racing and Gaming Commission today to grant casino licenses in Tama, Webster,
Wapello and Lyon counties. Casino operations have already been approved by
voters in each county.
Early this month, Gov. Chet Culver urged the commission to grant four new casino
licenses. He believes that would add $250 million to the state economy and
create hundreds of jobs.
The commission conducted a day-long hearing today to consider the issue and
whether or not the gaming market could support them.
Greg Seyfer, an Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission member, said "We're just
starting the process. This was their chance to expand upon the information that
they gave us in their applications. There's still two or three opportunities
where we'll gather more information and we still have to do site visits and have
a public hearing. So there's still a lot of information for us to gather".
The commissioners will decide by May on whether to grant new licenses. The state
currently licenses 17 casinos.
