September 17, 2008 NEBRASKA AND IOWA -- As reported by The World Herald: "Nebraska and Iowa can team up and legally attempt to block the Ponca Indian Tribe from building a casino in Carter Lake, a federal judge ruled Monday. "Judge Charles Wolle ruled that the State of Nebraska does have legal standing in the case despite the fact that the proposed casino would be built in Iowa. "He also consolidated separate lawsuits filed by Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning, Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller and the City of Council Bluffs. The trial is now set for Oct. 29 in Des Moines. "...The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska is trying to build a casino on five acres of land it owns in Carter Lake. The tribe successfully lobbied to get that land placed in a federal trust six years ago, a designation that seemingly gives the property many characteristics of reservation land, including the ability to build a casino exempt from state taxes..."
