Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Plan Casino in Middleborough
Voters in Middleborough passed a ballot initiative in July 2007 to allow the
Mashee Wampanoag to build a casino on their reservation land. The construction
still depends on federal approval by the Department of Interior which can take
18 months to 5 years.
Since then, Governor Patrick has proposed a bill for state licensed casinos
in Massachusetts, and the state legislature will take up the debate in early
2008. Governor Patrick wants the tribe to build their casino in New
Bedford instead of Middleborough, but the tribe says their is not enough
available land in New Bedford to build the resort casino complex they are
planning
